The Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Golders Green, London) (Emergency) (Revocation) Regulations 2026

Published: Mon 30th Mar 26

These Regulations formally revoke the previous statutory instrument that imposed emergency restrictions on flying aircraft within a specified area of Golders Green, London, because the Secretary of State has determined that maintaining the flight restriction is no longer necessary in the public interest following the conclusion of the emergency that prompted the initial order.

Arguments For

  • The primary purpose of these emergency restrictions has ceased to exist, making their continuation unnecessary for public interest.

  • Immediate revocation restores normal aviation regulations for the specified area, removing an administrative burden and operational constraint on legitimate flights, which aligns with standard practice once an emergency condition passes.

  • Demonstrates efficient governance by promptly rescinding temporary measures when the justification for them is no longer valid, upholding principles of proportionality in regulation.

Arguments Against

  • Assurance may be required regarding the specific event or circumstances that necessitated the original emergency restriction and confirmation that the situation causing the emergency is definitively resolved.

  • Lack of detailed context regarding the original threat might cause public concern about the speed of revocation if the underlying issue was severe or complex.

  • If the revocation was exceptionally swift, questions might arise about whether sufficient residual risk assessment was conducted before lifting the prohibition entirely.
